The McGill University/Université de Montréal Centre for International Peace and Security Studies (CIPSS) is inviting applications for visiting scholars in International/Regional Security. We are expecting two or three short-term positions between September 2013 and April 2014. Scholars (both senior and junior) can plan to spend a month or more in Montreal pursuing their research. Scholars who are on sabbatical and wish to spend a semester can also apply. The scholar will be provided office space, accommodation, economy airfare, per diem and if funds allow, an honorarium. We seek to hire a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto. The fellow will be associated with our Behavioural Politics Initiative. An ideal candidate will have a PhD in the social, behavioural, or statistical sciences. The ideal candidate will be engaged in work on political behaviour using large-scale representative and self-selected data (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, search, and voting advice application data). The position is principally a research appointment with quite limited non-research responsibilities.

The Behavioural Politics Initiative is a new undertaking in the department of political science at the University of Toronto. It is comprised of a small number of faculty and graduate students broadly interested in studies of politics that incorporate behavioural insights from across the social sciences and that utilize rigorous empirical and experimental methods. Members of our group have access to both a large student subject pool and a 20 station experimental lab. The Initiative also features a speakers' series and small conferences, the first to be held in the Fall of 2013 in Toronto.

Responsibilities of the postdoc will include:

- conducting research on behavioural politics using large-scale data from representative and self-selected subjects.

- helping to organize and administer lab and survey experiments.

- on a limited basis, acting as a resource on statistical methods to undergraduate students.

- on a limited basis, aiding in the administration of our speakers' series and small conference.

Ideal profile

The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:

* Excellent PhD in social or statistical sciences.

* Advanced training in statistical and/or experimental methods.

* An independent research agenda related to behavioural politics

* experience with large datasets and "big data"

* mastery or Stata and/or R, and ideally experience with z-tree

* other relevant programming experience (e.g. C++, python, perl)

* excellent organization and communication skills

The fellow will be provided with dedicated office space, some conference funds, and an annual salary of $40,000 CDN. The initial appointment will be made for 1 year.

The Department of Political Science at the University of Victoria invites applications for a Limited Term Assistant Teaching Professor in Canadian Public Policy and Methods for the period 1 September 2013 to 30 April 2014 (1.0 FTE). The successful candidate should have completed a PhD in Canadian Politics and/or Public Policy. The appointee will teach six undergraduate courses over the fall and spring terms (September to April). The courses will include a second year course Canadian Institutions of Government (POLI 201), an introductory course on Public Administration (POLI 350), a course on Public Policy Analysis (POLI 351), two sections of an introductory course on Research Methods (POLI 321) and one other third year course in Canadian Politics (for example POLI 361, 364, 365, 366). Politikon is the official academic journal of the South African Association of Political Studies (SAAPS), the professional body for South African political scientists. The journal appears three times per year and has a broad focus on issues of Political Studies and IR relevant for all developing regions of the world.

Applicants should submit a comprehensive CV indicating experience with editorial boards, editing academic journals and/or book reviews.

Period of appointment will be from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2016.

Editors will receive an honorarium for their work. Editors will have to become members of SAAPS if they are not already members.

Requirements:

Editor:
PhD in Political Science or related social science field, a strong publication record, and experience of editing and guest editing academic articles for journal publication, are basic requirements. An NRF Rating will be advantageous. Knowledge of the academic publishing environment will be an asset. The editor will have the following responsibilities regarding the publishing processes:

Ensure academic quality and currency of the journal; maintain and increase the international stature of the journal through inclusion in journal indices, databases and aggregators; plan and supervise the production of a theme-based special issue every year; solicit and vet scholarly submissions; determine two peer reviewers for each article; oversee the processes of revisions based on reviewer feedback; follow strict time lines for the production of three issues per year; submit feedback in the form of quarterly reports to the SAAPS Council.

Assistant Editor:
At least an MA in Political Science or related social science field with a publication record and experience of editing academic articles for journal publication. Knowledge of electronic software programmes for the use in editing is a necessity.

The assistant editor will share the workload with the editor and help with follow-ups throughout the processes of editing and publication.

Book Review Editor
MA in Political Science with experience of editing academic book reviews. Knowledge and interest in a broad range of Political Studies issue areas and new titles will be an asset.
Responsibilities will include procuring new titles from academic publishers, identifying reviewers, distributing books to interested reviewers, ensuring the timely delivery of reviews, and editing the book reviews.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) invites post-doctoral fellows interested in global governance and policy-relevant research to consider the CIGI Campus in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, as a preferred location for their residency.

CIGI post-doctoral fellows are also welcomed as visiting post-doctoral scholars with the Balsillie School of International Affairs. All fellows are required to secure funding from external fellowships (for example, Canada’s Social Sciences Humanities Research Council).

Successful candidates will receive supplemental research, mentoring and office support, including space and IT support, along with an envelope of research resources providing up to $10,000 annually to assist with field work, data purchases, conference presentations and related ways of enhancing the overall research experience.

Conducting an active agenda of research and public affairs activities including publications, events and broadcast programs, CIGI’s interdisciplinary work includes collaboration with an intellectual community of policy makers, journalists, academics and the private sector in Canada and around the world. CIGI’s research programs focus on four themes: global economy; global security;environment and energy; and global development — all of these viewed through the lens of international governance.

CIGI post-doctoral fellows are expected to participate in the CIGI community, seek opportunities to present their own research work, and disseminate their research results through a number of CIGI outlets.

While CIGI post-doctoral fellows should expect to focus on their funded post-doctoral research project, they will also have the opportunity to participate and assist in CIGI research activities. Should a post-doctoral fellow’s external grant extend to two years, CIGI will organize a research workshop around his or her principal project.
