Background
Recognised as study group in 1995; granted research committee status in 1999.
Objectives
Focuses on the emergence and shifts of new and old "localisms", neighbourhoods, local communities, ethnic and language identities, affinity groups, economic and political associations and their networks that create regions and impact on the incipient world system.
The theoretical context in which this group operates includes spatial and temporal relations, the development of increased complexity or integrated diversity that transcends traditional boundaries, the logics of regionalism, including those of political integration as well as classical concepts from territorial human organisation.
