The Regulation of Animal Health and Welfare

This book is the result of an interdisciplinary research project involving political scientists, lawyers, economists, veterinary scientists and epidemiologists. The focus is on diseases of cattle which have posed many challenges for policy makers in recent years. There is a critical appraisal of regulatory institutions and guiding principles of how to maintain animal health in the context of a developing global economy. The study indicates that there is a need for a radical rethink of basic principles and that risk analysis must be more reliably based on and inclusive of socio-economic evidence. Economic uncertainty, climate change, new diseases threats and global pressures on food resources are all considered in this book.
