Job Description

Within the permissible boundaries, priority for the advertised fellowship will be given to applications from highly qualified researchers from Palestine and Lebanon who have been displaced or forced to interrupt their research activities due to the ongoing war.

The successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree (completed no more than ten years previously at the time of the award of the postdoctoral fellowship) and will be chosen on the basis of scholarly excellence, a research proposal outlining a project to be pursued during the fellowship (up to 3 pages), and a job interview.

The MPIfG provides an attractive environment for postdoctoral researchers to pursue their own research projects within the scope of its research program. Postdoctoral researchers are expected to reside in the Cologne area and actively participate in Institute life. Please note that this is a special call for a one-year fellowship, distinct from our regular postdoctoral program. Any preferential consideration of the group of researchers stated in the special call is excluded if reasons worthy of legal protection, which lie in the qualification and/or person of another candidate, prevail.

A collaborative and collegial working environment is integral to the MPIfG. Starting from the application process, we are committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all of our employees. The compatibility of career and family is also one of our key concerns, as is the employment of people with disabilities.

We look forward to receiving your online application. It should be submitted in English or German. Applications by email cannot be considered. The deadline for applications is January 15, 2025 (11:00 am UTC+1). Applicants will be notified whether or not they have been successful at the end of March.

Deadline: 15 January 2025

The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) conducts basic research on the governance of modern societies. It aims to develop an empirically based theory of the social and political foundations of modern economies by investigating the interrelation between social, economic, and political action. Building on the disciplinary traditions of sociology and political science, the Institute’s research program aims to combine and develop the approaches of new economic sociology and comparative and international political economy.
