Citizenship and Mobility in the EU: Policies, Actors, and Practices

In a context of widening inequalities and rising populism, increasing mobility to and from the EU has gained salience in societal, political, and academic debates. It has also raised questions regarding the significance and boundaries of the EU citizenship, shifting dynamics in the evolution of immigration and emigration policies of EU Member States, the set of rights granted to immigrants living in the EU and to EU citizens residing in third countries, as well as EU citizens’ attitudes towards migration, diversity and inclusion, among others. This panel seeks to contribute to these ongoing debates, by examining the design, outcomes and outputs of citizenship and mobility policymaking in the EU. In doing so, the panel also reflects on the changing roles of different national, sub-national and supranational actors in migration and integration policies, as well as on the effects of existing regulations on migrants’ lives.
