

PHD Workshop: Political Conflict in Western Societies

The Robert Schuman Centre at the European University Institute in Florence is pleased to invite applications for a PhD Workshop on 26-27 May 2025. The workshop, led by Professor Liesbet Hooghe and Professor Gary Marks, is an opportunity for Ph.D. researchers to receive feedback on their dissertation in a constructive environment and foster connections with other PhD researchers.
Research on the structure of political conflict, cleavage politics, political parties, demand-supply side dynamics, the politics of climate change, and multilevel governance are especially encouraged. This workshop is methodologically pluralistic.
Twelve participants will receive fellowships that cover economy travel (within Europe, including Israel and Turkey), local accommodation, and meals.
Each fellow will present their own paper and discuss one other. They will reside in Florence for the duration of the workshop and participate in all workshop activities.
To apply, please submit by 1 March 2025:
- A title and short abstract of your paper (max 150 words)*;
- A one-to-two-page outline of your paper or dissertation plan (double-spaced);
- A Curriculum Vitae;
- Please include in your submission a letter of support from your advisor/supervisor.
Applicants will be informed by March 15, 2025. Participants will then be invited to submit a paper or chapter (flexible length: 6,000 to 10,000 words) related to their dissertation by 15 May 2025.
