Job Description

Note: This opportunity is only available to candidates who have completed their doctoral studies and are affiliated with an academic or research institution located outside of Quebec.

The Immigration Research Initiative (IRI), located in the Department of Political Science at Concordia University (Montreal) is inviting applications for visiting researchers. IRI is seeking applications for 2-to-4 week research stays at Concordia University for 2025 in the field of immigration.

Priority will be given to projects focusing on Quebec and/or any other multinational states, but proposed projects may also focus on other case studies, including, but not limited to, countries, nations, or regions characterized by significant immigration.

Funded by the Secrétariat du Québec aux relations canadiennes, IRI’s objective is to build bridges between immigration research in Quebec and elsewhere in the world. Its Visiting Scholars program is designed to financially support postdoctoral researchers, assistant professors or professors in equivalent positions, as well as professors on sabbatical leave, who are conducting or who wish to conduct a research project related to IRI’s mission.

More specifically, IRI is looking for applicants who wish to develop a project on one of the following topics:

1) the feelings of national identification among immigrants and ethnocultural minorities

2) the place of immigration and ethnocultural diversity in the construction of national identity within the host society

Priority will be given to junior researchers (who completed their Ph.D. in the past seven years), but more senior researchers are also invited to apply.

Candidates must be affiliated with an academic or research institution located outside of Quebec. Applications from outside Canada are strongly encouraged.

Recipients will receive financial support to cover travel and living expenses associated with their visit to Concordia University. This financial support includes the cost of a round-trip ticket between their place of origin and Montreal in economy class, as well as a daily allowance of $CAD 200 for accommodation and living expenses.

Selected individuals must be present at Concordia University for a period of 2 to 4 weeks and must complete their stay before December 15, 2025.

Selected candidates will present their research at a seminar at Concordia University. They will also be integrated into the activities of the Institute for Research on Migration and Society.

Eligibility:

  • Have completed doctoral studies and hold a PhD;
  • At the time of the visit to IRI, be: a postdoctoral researcher, an assistant professor or professor in an equivalent position, or a professor on sabbatical leave;
  • Be affiliated with an academic or research institution located outside of Quebec at the time of the visit to IRI.

To submit your application:

Interested candidates should send the following documents to Antoine Bilodeau and Mireille Paquet:

  • A letter describing the candidate’s research expertise and a brief description of the project, highlighting its links to IRI’s mission, and indicating the stage of development of the project;
  • A curriculum vitae.

For more information or to send your application: iri@concordia.ca.

Applications will be accepted until December 15, 2024
