Political engagement of youth can be considered as a significant pillar of contemporary political discourse, in which youth are a source of political dynamism and innovations. Thus, this panel generally propose to welcome study on engagement of youth in formal political processes across the globe. For instance, this panel propose to welcome engagement of Indian youth in formal political process to strengthen and promote inclusive democratic structure beyond familial political background. In this context, it is worth mentioning the programme to bring one lakh youth into the formal political process for building inclusive democratic structures. The Nigerian government urges youth to deliberate on collective interest. The Bangladesh government also established youth parliament to engage youth to facilitating policy-making process. The Indonesian youth are capable to reshape the political system and deepening democracy through using digital platforms. In Moldova also different disadvantaged youth groups are actively engaged in formal political process for better socio-economic opportunities.
However, youth are facing acute problems such as poverty, unemployment, where there is rising trend of youth disengagement in formal political processes. For instance, policymakers in UK are concerned about the disengaged paradigm of youth. Therefore, this panel welcomes studies on disengaged and engaged paradigm of youth in formal political process. The disengaged paradigm is not only limited to Europe, but also present in Asian political systems, particularly in Singapore.
As the main theme of the Congress is resisting autocracies in polarised societies, where active engagement of youth in formal political processes can strengthen democratic structure and overturning autocratic regimes respectively. The Panel invites papers on strategies for Engagement of Youth in Formal Political Processes and Inclusion of Youth in Politics, as a Forerunner to A Culture of Inclusive Political Participation. We invite scholars to address topics that include, but are not limited to all of the above.
