Public Trust in Populistic Times

Public trust in official institutions such as the central and the local government, the judiciary, and legislative is fundamental for democratic governance. Numerous studies document both antecedents and implications of public trust on varied aspects of the society and of the functioning of the state. Key phenomena in populism, like fake news, may impose new challenges on ensuring and nurturing public trust.
This panel aims at exploring how public trust - in any official institution, is influenced by different aspects of populism, as well as on the influence of public trust on the functioning of the state. We particularly look for comparative outlook on trust trends and developments in different contexts.
