Description

The global trend of democratic backsliding, which allegedly began in the mid-2000s, remains a pressing concern today. In response, a burgeoning field of autocratization studies has emerged. However, unlike the well-established theoretical frameworks for democratization, the study of autocratization lacks a unified canon of theories. This roundtable brings together leading scholars in the field of autocratization to explore how we can better theorize this phenomenon in its contemporary manifestations. The discussion will address critical questions, including: What are the key causes and consequences of autocratization? How does political polarization interact with and influence this trend? What dimensions and questions are most crucial for rigorous analysis? Are there regional variations that call for tailored theoretical approaches? Furthermore, how can recent methodological advancements in political science enhance our understanding of autocratization? By engaging with these pressing issues, this roundtable aims to contribute to the development of a more cohesive theoretical foundation for the study of autocratization and to chart new directions for future research in the field.
