This panel will critically examine the challenges to secularism and minority political participation in contemporary India. It will analyze the extent to which Modi's India can be termed an "ethnic democracy" (Jaffrelot 2021) and whether the recent 2024 elections signal a retreat from the establishment of a "Hindu Rashtra" (Shani 2021). It will also highlight the role that caste plays in the politics of Hindutva (Krishna 2025).
