Description

This panel looks at the use of federal structures in authoritarian contexts.
Looking at cases such as Russia, Venezuela, the United Arab Emirates, but also federalising countries that have faced substantial democracy challenges such as Sudan and Somalia will help in understanding how, when, why, by whom and to what effect federal structures are utilised in non-democratic settings.
Papers may address any of the following themes:
1. Conceptualising federalism in non-democratic settings
2. Case studies on federal studies in non-democratic settings
3. Impact assessment of the effects of federal studies in non-democratic cases
